History

Costa del Sol - South Spain Tourism

Its subtropical climate and proximity to the Mediterranean have attracted populations since prehistory and the Phoenician colonisers, from which a necropolis (Cerro de la Sombras) has been conserved. The Romans as well built a fort in these places of which there are still some remains today, and left the current toponymy Frexininsana, town of Frexinio. But the peak stage for Frigiliana is between the XIV and the XVI centuries under the Nazarene rule and the Christian conquest. Its Morisco populations lived in peace with their co-neighbour Christians until the famous revolt in 1569 known as the Peñon de Frigiliana war which ended with the expel of the Moors and the repopulation of the village by the Christians.

In the old part, twelve mosaics by the painter Pilar García Millán recreate the village’s history.
